The Colorado Civic Educator of the Year award recognizes an exemplary classroom educator who has demonstrated exceptional expertise in teaching about citizenship, the U.S. Constitution, Colorado Studies, Congress, and/or public policy at the state and local levels and is committed to preparing students to become informed and engaged citizens. This award is presented in honor of the extraordinary work of the Center for Education in Law and Democracy, which promoted and supported the development of responsible citizens committed to democratic principles and active participation in representative government in Colorado since 2002.

How do I nominate a teacher?
The nomination form is now open! To nominate an educator, please complete this Nomination Form by October 10th. Results will be communicated by October 24th.
Nominations for the award should come from an administrator, supervisor, principal, educator, student, parent or other individual who can provide credible evidence of the nominee’s achievements. No self-nominations will be accepted.
Eligibility Criteria
Nominees should demonstrate the following:
- Commitment: The educator provides enriching activities to supplement classroom pursuits and elevates rigor for students. The educator’s love for education is evident and provides motivation for students.
- Competence: The educator has a deep knowledge of the subject and applies this knowledge in realistic and inspiring ways which stimulate student interest and increase students’ understanding of citizenship and how it relates to other subjects, and of its significance in our society.
- Concern: The educator cares about students’ academic and personal development. Students feel respected within the learning community. The educator embodies a belief that all students desire high quality and authentic instructional experiences and that each student can demonstrate high expectations.
- Critical Thinking: The educator uses teaching techniques that foster the development of critical thinking in various ways. The educator encourages students to express their ideas and creates a safe classroom environment which models a civil and engaged society.
- Democratic Principles: Fosters the development and deep understanding of democratic beliefs and values, and the skills needed for citizenship participation appropriate to students in the classroom, school, and community settings.
- Leadership: The educator provides a personal and professional model for others to follow; assists other educators and inspires a professional learning community that shares ideas and improves student outcomes; and contributes positively to departmental, school, and community activities.
- Student Voice: Actively encourages students to find and use their voice as engaged citizens in a civil society.
How is the Colorado Civics Educator of the Year selected?
The recipient will be selected by a volunteer award committee based on the criteria listed above. If you would like to volunteer for the award committee next year please email [email protected].
How is Colorado’s Civic Educator of the Year honored?
- The recipient will receive $1,000 to be used for civics professional development, classroom supplies or other classroom needs.
- The award will be announced at a Civics for Colorado event on November 4th. The finalist will be notified by October 24th.
